馬克白名句(上)

劇本概要

《馬克白》係莎翁四大悲劇之一,也是他所有劇作中最短的一部。一般都將此劇當作「對於恐懼之探討」來讀。

馬克白和班柯這兩位蘇格蘭將軍打了一場勝仗,班師回朝途中經過一片枯黃的荒原時,出現三個神秘女巫跟他們攀談,她們預言般地依序高呼馬克白為「格拉密斯領主」、「考竇爾領主」、「未來的蘇格蘭王」,然後跟班柯說他的兒子們將登上王座。

正當他們站在那裡納悶的時候,國王的信差來報:加封馬克白為「考竇爾領主」。

女巫的第二個預言實現後,燃起了他想當國王的野心;他的妻子極力慫恿他去殺掉鄧肯國王以實現巫婆的「未來的蘇格蘭王」預言,並刻薄地責罵他行事猶豫。馬克白勉強順從妻意,謀殺了鄧肯,並篡位。

由於擔心巫婆預言的第二部份成真,馬克白買了兩名刺客去殺害班柯和他兒子弗里恩斯,但是弗里恩斯在混亂中跑走而逃過一劫。

後來馬克白得知鄧肯王的兒子麥爾科姆正在英格蘭募集一支軍隊,並得蘇格蘭的麥克德夫爵士加入,要向他進攻,就把麥克德夫的妻兒們弄死。

馬克白夫人因受不了良心的譴責而發瘋,終於自殺;是後麥克德夫偕同英格蘭軍隊打回蘇格蘭把馬克白殺死。最後,麥爾科姆被加冕為王。

女巫甲:我們三個將在甚麼時候再聚,
    等打雷,等閃電或是等下雨?
女巫乙:等這場動亂結束,
    等這場戰爭分出勝負。
Fair is foul, and foul is fair:

美即是醜惡,醜惡即是美:

穿越雲霧濁氣我們飛。 (上句是指價值的顛倒。舉一反三:對即是錯,錯即是對;清即是濁,濁即是清)
(Where the Norweyan) banners flout the sky (I. ii. 50) / 旗幟藐視天空 = 軍隊侮辱我們國家(這裡是轉喻修辭法,banners 代表the whole army)
A sailor's wife had chestnuts in her lap,
And munch'd, and munch'd, and munch'd:--
'Give me,' quoth I:
'Aroint thee, witch!' the rump-fed ronyon cries. (I, iii, 4) / 一個水手的妻雙腿上兜滿栗子,坐在那裡啃著,啃著,啃著:──我說,「給我一點兒」:那胖臀結痂婆子喊了起來「滾開,妖婆!」
Sleep shall neither night nor day
Hang upon his pent-house lid; (I, iii, 19)
眼皮高掛,晝夜都不得入眠;
(Shall he) dwindle, peak and pine: (I, iii, 23) / 削瘦,削瘦,削瘦:
So foul and fair a day I have not seen. (I, iii, 38) / 我沒有看過如此混濁帶清朗的天氣。
If you can look into the seeds of time,

And oftentimes, to win us to our harm,
The instruments of darkness tell us truths,
Win us with honest trifles, to betray's
In deepest consequence. (I, iii, 123) / 邪惡的傀儡為了要引誘我們受害,往往告訴我們一些真話,以真實小事獲得我們信任,然後在大事上使我們陷入嚴重的後果。
As happy prologues to the swelling act
Of the imperial theme (I, iii, 128) / 有如那齣帝王大戲的歡樂序幕
I am thane of Cawdor:
If good, why do I yield to that suggestion
Whose horrid image doth unfix my hair
And make my seated heart knock at my ribs,
Against the use of nature? Present fears
Are less than horrible imaginings: (I, iii, 134) / 如今我確是考竇爾領主:如果這是好事,為甚麼我順服那謀殺鄧肯的聯想,可怕的景象使我毛髮悚然,穩定的心臟也怦怦撞擊肋骨,一反常態?現實的恐懼其實不比可怕的想像來得嚇人:
If chance will have me king, why, chance may crown me,
Without my stir. (I, iii, 143) / 如果機緣要我當國王,那麼,機緣自然會為我加冕,用不著我費力。
Come what come may,
Time and the hour runs through the roughest day. (I, iii,146)
要發生甚麼就讓它發生甚麼,
最多事的日子總會快速度過。
: nothing in his life
Became him like the leaving it; he died
As one that had been studied in his death
To throw away the dearest thing he owed,
As 'twere a careless trifle.
(I, iv, 7) / 他一生行事從來沒有像臨終那樣得體;他好像對於死這一件事是訓練有素的,把他最寶貴的東西竟視如草芥一般隨便拋棄了。
There's no art
To find the mind's construction in the face:
He was a gentleman on whom I built
An absolute trust. (I, iv, 11) / 知人知面難知心:他曾經是我絕對信任的一位紳士。
Glamis thou art, and Cawdor; and shalt be
What thou art promised: yet do I fear thy nature;
It is too full o' the milk of human kindness
To catch the nearest way: (I, v, 16) / 你已經是格拉密斯和考竇爾領主了;並且將要是那被預示的位置:可是我很為你的本性感到不安;你的本性是太富於慈悲心腸而不敢抄取捷徑:

Your face, my thane, is as a book where men
May read strange matters. (I, v, 63) / 我的領主,你的臉像是一本書,讓人可以看出奇怪的事情。
(Your hand, your tongue:) look like the innocent flower,
But be the serpent under't.
(I, v, 66) / 看起來像一朵純潔的花,但實際上是花底下的那條蛇。
Duncan: This castle hath a pleasant seat; the air
Nimbly and sweetly recommends itself
Unto our gentle senses.
Banquo: This guest of summer,
The temple-haunting martlet, does approve,
By his loved mansionry, that the heaven's breath
Smells wooingly here: no jutty, frieze,
Buttress, nor coign of vantage, but this bird
Hath made his pendent bed and procreant cradle:
Where they most breed and haunt, I have observed,
The air is delicate. (I, vi, 1)
鄧肯:這座城堡是一處令人愉悅的地方;輕快流動的空氣引我們感覺優雅。
班珂:那夏天的賓客,那投身神殿的燕子,在這裡築起巢舍,可以證明此地的空氣是很誘人的:凡是簷頭壁緣,或是拱壁,以及一切合適的角落裡,若有燕子常在那裡搭起棲息蕃殖的搖籃,那地方空氣必是美好的。
If it were done when 'tis done, then 'twere well
It were done quickly: if the assassination
Could trammel up the consequence, and catch
With his surcease success; that but this blow
Might be the be-all and the end-all here,
But here, upon this bank and shoal of time,
We'ld jump the life to come. (I, vii, 1) / 如果這件事完成了就一勞永逸,那麼越快做成越妙:如果此番暗殺能阻絕後患,他之一死就獲得成功;只此一擊便可達成今生的最高目標──,僅只今生,在這時間大海的灘岸上,──我們就甘冒來世的風險。
(To plague the inventor:) this even-handed justice (I, vii, 10) / 公平的報應
Besides, this Duncan
Hath borne his faculties so meek, hath been
So clear in his great office, that his virtues
Will plead like angels, trumpet-tongued, against
The deep damnation of his taking-off;
And pity, like a naked new-born babe,
Striding the blast, or heaven's cherubim, horsed
Upon the sightless couriers of the air,
Shall blow the horrid deed in every eye,
That tears shall drown the wind. I have no spur
To prick the sides of my intent, but only
Vaulting ambition, which o'erleaps itself

Like the poor cat i' the adage? (I, vii, 44) / 讓「我不敢」伺候「我要」,像雋語中那隻可憐的貓?(adage = Three Hundred Epigrammes, 書載一隻貓想吃魚,卻不敢打濕腳。)
I dare do all that may become a man;
Who dares do more, is none.
(I, vii, 46) / 適合男人做的事我都敢做;凡是膽敢做得更多的,就不是男人。
Nor time nor place
Did then adhere, (I, vii, 51) / 那時,時間地點都不適宜,
I have given suck, and know
How tender 'tis to love the babe that milks me:
I would, while it was smiling in my face,
Have pluck'd my nipple from his boneless gums,
And dash'd the brains out, had I so sworn as you

Macbeth: If we should fail?
Lady Macbeth: We fail!

馬克白:我們若是失敗了呢?
馬克白夫人:我們就失敗了!只要你鼓起極大的勇氣,我們就不會失敗。
(That) memory, the warder of the brain, (I, vii, 65) / 記憶,腦筋的守護者,
Away, and mock the time with fairest show:
False face must hide what the false heart doth know. (I, vii, 81)
去吧,用美麗的外表騙取世人:
心中奸詐必要虛偽面貌去藏隱。
